Introducing the new Cirencester cocktail

MANHATTAN has one named after it and so has Shanghai..

And now bar manager Tony Smith is hoping to shake up Cirencester and place it well and truly on the map after developing a cocktail in its honour.

The fruity concoction was put together at the Standard's request as part of the newspaper's Shop Cirencester campaign and the Cirencester Smile initiative.

Both are designed to promote all that is good about the town and, in line with Smile's Happy Hour later this month, when shops will remain open late, we felt the town needed its own special cocktail to add to the occasion.

Using the ingredients listed below, we are urging shops, bars and restaurants to enter into the 'spirit' of things and offer customers a drink.

Tony, who runs Bar Havana, and who developed the drink with Rock Club manager Ian Benjamin, said: "We had a drink similar to this, the ingredients of which were a long-cherished secret, but we're willing to give the secret away now as a celebration of Cirencester.

"It's a great summer drink and is really fruity and tasty, but watch out - it's got a kick!"

Happy Hour is encouraging retailers in the town to create a party atmosphere on June 24, when many stores will remain open until 8pm.

Now all we need is a name for the Cirencester cocktail and we're inviting readers to write in with their suggestions.

The winner and a friend will receive free admission to the town's late-night Rock Club venue and a meal for two at Bar Havana during any lunchtime.

To be in with a chance of winning, and, of course, choosing the name for the new Cirencester Cocktail* simply email your suggestion to editor@wiltsglosstandard.co.uk with the word 'cocktail' as the subject.

* This is a family newspaper and Smile Cirencester is a family event... so please keep your suggestions clean!

Make your own Cirencester cocktail by following these instructions:

Pour one shot of vodka, one shot of Malibu, half a shot of peach schnapps and half a shot of Cointreau, into a tumbler and top up with orange juice. Rotate the glass while gently pouring Grenadine around the edge, before dressing the glass with a wedge of lime and a slice of orange.

The finished cocktail should look like the one pictured!
