Abbey Lake Angling Club chairman is made a life member at presentation night

ABBEY Lake Angling Club held its annual meeting and presentation night recently at the Fisherman's Rest, South Cerney.

The chairman recognised the contribution of some of the younger members of the committee along with the secretary, match secretary and especially the retiring treasurer.

With good support from Cirencester District Council, Abbey Lake AC were able to further stock the lake with new bream and the club is working closely with both the town council and environment agency to make improvements to the lake to the benefit of members and the town as a whole.

The Abbey team competed in The Angling Times/Van Den Eynde Supercup competition and reached the final for the second time.

This, along with a semi-final appearance in all of the past five years, has been a great achievement for a club of its size.

The 2004 competition, though, has not been such a success with Abbey Lake losing to South Cerney by one point in the first round in a close tournament.

This disappointment was softened by the fact that Abbey had two juniors fishing in the event, and recognised the performance of Matthew Brett in particular in his first year at the sport.

The costs for membership, which is now available, will remain the same as last year - £12 for adults, £6 senior citizens/students and £4 juniors.

The meeting unanimously agreed to the making of a new life member, the current chairman Dave Savage, who has been involved with the club since its inception 15 years ago. This recognition of his sterling efforts is thoroughly deserved.

Prizewinners are as follows: Bar-B-Que Cup (junior), Marcus Coles; Bar-B-Que Cup, Andy Bartlett; Pairs Shield, Matt Greaves/Clive Barton; Pike Shield, Matthew Brett; Roach Cup, Clive Barton; Roach Cup (junior), Matthew Brett; Brian Mullock Shield, Matthew Brett; President's Cup, Matt Greaves; Dads and Lads, Marcus Cole and Andy Bartlett; Silver Fish Trophy, Clive Barton; Perch Cup, Matthew Brett; Last Chance Cup, Clive Barton; Aggregate winner (junior), Matthew Brett; aggregate winner, Clive Barton.
