Malmesbury boxer Williamson decks his opponent in 60 seconds flat

AFTER a two-and-a-half-hour journey to Devonport last Saturday, it took Malmesbury ABC's Dan Williamson just 60 seconds to end the challenge of Launceston's Oliver Hobb.

Williamson was quickly into his stride and found Hobb an easy target for his fast left hand to hand and body.

A left hook to the body clearly had an affect on Hobbs and a follow-up right hand had the Cornish boy on the floor.

The luckless Hobb got to his feet, but the referee ruled he was in no condition to continue.

Williamson will surely face sterner opposition when he steps into the ring this Saturday at Chippenham's Olympiad Leisure Centre to face Aaron Rees, from Newport's St Joseph's gym.

But on current form, he is expected to extend his unbeaten run. Seven of his club mates are matched to appear on the bill, which should see a bumper number of bouts contested. Andrew Ware will be looking to reverse a controversial defeat at the hands of Cleeve's Matthew Burke.

Ware has all the technical skills to achieve this reversal and requires only the determination to make revenge a reality.

Sam Brazier has made pro-gress in the gym and would love to notch his first win when he meets Lye's Jimmy Jones from the Midlands.

Smart-punching Sam Jenner will also be seeking to avenge a points defeat against Lewis Edwards from Guildford's Onslow Lion Club.

This promises to be a classic encounter between two young but competent ring technicians, and the outcome could be in the balance until the last bell.

Clint Stevens will need all of his new-found coolness to overcome the challenge of Downend's tall George Stone if he is to extend his unbeaten run but it is likely that Stevens' strength will prevail.

Elder brother Luke has modified his style in the gym, and now has more crispness and power in his punches which he could put to good effect against Onslow's Mark Grant.

Super-fit featherweight Paul Falcone must put all his hard training to good use in his return with Lye's Alan Lysaght who out-pointed him earlier in the season. The key to victory will be steady pressure behind the jab and making good use of every opportunity at close range.

Middleweight Richard Nelson has yet to fulfil his potential, but is punching harder than ever and will be looking to rise to the occasion when he meets Penhill's Steve Cooney. Not appearing on his own show, schoolboy starlet Joe Hughes is sidelined after breaking his ankle and club officials are also searching desperately for an opponent for 11-stone 13-year-old Richard Sheppard who is so difficult to match at his age and weight.
