Jane helps her male colleagues win a team race at Highworth

CIRENCESTER Athletic Club's male runners had some success at the recent Highworth Five race, albeit with a little help from Jane Wassell.

For the club won the team prize thanks to Dave Wright, Martin Pitts and Jane who all finished in the top 20.

The race , the second round of the club's road race championship, attracted good support from members.

Wright was in the top ten until the notorious hill in the last mile, but just held off Martin Pitts at the finish. Jane Wassell was second lady home.

And Wright now leads the club championship from Tony Curry who had another good run at Highworth, showing that he will be a leading contender in his age category when he moves up to the over 60s later this year.

The club's current leading vet 60 Dick Waldron lies third in the championship. In the ladies' category, Carol Clarke holds a narrow lead over Kim Withycomb ahead of the club's top ladies Jane Wassell and Wendy Jones who haveraced in only one round so far.

Cirencester finishers at Highworth were: 14 Dave Wright 30m49s, 15 Martin Pitts 30.54, 19 Jane Wassell 31.40, 32 Duncan Atkinson 32.50, 37 Bob Ferris 33.15, 62 Chris Sherrington 34.12, 74 Tony Curry 35.04, 121 Dick Waldron 37.24, 141 Carol Clarke 38.48, 178 Kim Withycomb 40.43, 216 Graham Clarke 42.25.

Leading positions in the club road race championship after two rounds are: male - 1 D Wright 28, 2 T Curry 25, 3 D Waldron 24; female - 1 C Clarke 26, 2 K Withycomb 24, 3 J Wassell 16.

Next round is the Berkeley 10k on Monday, May 17, 7.30pm.
