Train station gardeners appeal for help

FOUR years ago the 'wild' garden at Kemble Railway Station was turned into a pretty and welcoming spot.

But now the attractive garden is at risk of falling back into decline.

Shirley Philip, who lives in Ampney Crucis, was behind its transformation.

She said: "My husband uses the train quite a lot and I became fed up with seeing the garden look such a mess."

After putting up notices asking for commuters to make contributions to buy plants, Mrs Philip and two gardening friends set to work replanting and nurturing plants already there.

Mrs Philip said: "So many people have commented since that it is looking pretty, benches have been set up and people come and look at it and sit out there in the sun.

"Ken at the kiosk is a great support to us, he waters from time to time and keeps things going."

Mrs Philip, however, is unlikely to carry on for much longer.

"I have recently had an operation on one of my hands and I'm not sure I should continue for much longer," she said.

"We are hoping more people, who have an hour or so to spare, will volunteer just to maintain the garden as it is.

"Anyone that knows anything about gardening at all or even those don't would be welcome, we would be able show people what is needed."
