Wootton Bassett beaten by Fairford side going for a strong finish

FAIRFORD knew they would have to win all their last six games to have any chance of a top-six finish that their manager, Mark Webb, has hankered after all season.

But if they maintain the sort of form that enabled them to thrash a useful Wootton Bassett side 4-0 in Saturday's local derby at Cinder Lane, then it still isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

Neil Matthews opened the scoring on 28 minutes when his header from a Ryan Lovegrove corner adjudged to have cross the line, despite Paul Patel's attempts to clear.

Phil Corcoran doubled the Fairford lead just 15 minutes after the break, blasting past Ian Gill from the edge of the box.

Chris Hughes hit the third on 54 minutes after Gill had parried a Corcoran effort and Sam Reason completed the scoring against his former club with a goal nine minutes from time.

This Saturday, Fairford are home to Pegasus (3pm) and next Wednesday, they entertain Tuffley Rovers. On Saturday, April 24, they travel to Bishops Cleeve and on Tuesday, April 27, they play hosts to Highworth. Their final game sees them home to Brackley on Saturday, May 1.
