A SCINTILLATING display at Hook Norton on Saturday, that brought Fairford Town FC their 18th league win of the season, has elevated the side back up to seventh place in the Hellenic Premier table.
But victory looked an unlikely scenario for the Cinder Lane team after their hosts scored first through Ward with the game barely two minutes old.
With Lee Kilfoyle, Simon Gregory, Ryan Lovegrove, Courtney Chessell, Steve Thomas and Simon Gregory all unavailable, Fairford manager Mark Webb turned to Dan Mason, Carl Marsh and Kevin Ackrill for help in his starting line-up.
After the visitors had recovered from that early setback, Kris Murray scored the Fairford equaliser with a header ten minutes later. After this, Town controlled the game well to finish as 4-1 winners.
Fairford's other goals came courtesy of a Neil Matthews brace, scored in the 35th and 60th minutes, and a final goal by Lee Clarke six minutes from time.
Last night (Wednesday), Fairford Town were looking to clinch the Norman Matthews Floodlit Cup at the expense of their Slimbridge visitors.
With Slimbridge holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg, the Cinder Lane team knew only too well that they needed to win by two clear goals to lift the silverware.
