Fairford looking to put out the Slimbridge lights in Floodlit Cup final

MATT Green's 65th-minute goal has given Slimbridge a slender 1-0 lead to take to Cinder Lane next Wednesday to face Fairford yet again for the second leg of this Floodlit Cup Final (7.30pm ko).

In Tuesday night's first leg tie, visiting goalie James Price was the busier of the two keepers and was called on to deal with several corners in the first half

Fairford's best opportunity fell to Phil Corcoran in the fifth minute, but his powerful, dipping shot sailed just over the bar.

Fairford's Steve Thomas was cautioned for a foul shortly before half-time, but the home team were also guilty of wasting the free kick and both teams went in goalless at the break.

There was drama early in the second half when strong Slim-bridge appeals for a penalty were turned down by the referee.

Play was then held up for two minutes following an injury to Corcoran, but he was able to continue after treatment.

After the hosts broke the deadlock, Craig Cole almost doubled their lead, but his shot struck an upright.

Fairford responded with a flurry of attacks which resulted in two corners, but the home keeper was able to gather both cleanly.

And a last-ditch tackle by Thomas denied Slimbridge a chance of a second goal.

On Wednesday evening of last week, Fairford defeated their Gloucester United hosts 2-1 in a league match. Last Saturday, Fairford added another three Hellenic Premier points by beating Carterton 1-0 at Cinder Lane.
