New production of comic opera

THE Gilbert and Sullivan classic, HMS Pinafore, will be docking at the Everyman from Monday to Saturday, March 1-6.

Produced by the internationally acclaimed Carl Rosa Company, this brand new production is directed by one of the country's most highly acclaimed actors, Timothy West, and stars Colin Baker as Sir Joseph Porter.

The ever-popular comic opera is a tale of love, hypocrisy and mistaken identity. Chaos reigns when the Captain's daughter falls secretly in love with a common sailor.

Pledged by her father to marry the mighty Sir Joseph Porter, the 'ruler of the Queen's Navy', young Josephine finds herself torn between love and duty.

The action takes place on the quarterdeck of the HMS Pinafore which has been stylishly designed complete with a tiered cabin, rigging, steam funnel, sails and an ocean view backdrop.

The costumes feature authentic Victorian designs, created with exquisite detail. The sailors wear traditional blue and white sailor suites whilst the ladies are adorned with bustles, dainty hats and glittering evening gowns.

Both costumes and sets have been designed by leading film designer Christine Edzard whose work will be familiar to audiences of BBC period dramas and feature films including the Oscar-winning film Little Dorrit.

HMS Pinafore promises to be a wonderfully entertaining production suitable for all ages, whether they're new to opera or die-hard Gilbert and Sullivan fans, and features classic songs such as I'm Called Little Buttercup, When I was a Lad and I am the Captain of the Pinafore.

Tickets from the box office on 01242 572573.
