Hughes moves up to joint second place Shenington karting series

IN the Shenington Winter Series Karting Championship, Richard Hughes moved up to joint second place last weekend.

In a high-class 125 Rotax field, the Castle Eaton driver was classified sixth on the day - enough to move him up to joint second overall from over 40 entrants in the three-round series with one event to go.

The Total Butler driver explained, "We have been having engine problems this season, but my Arrow kart was working well and I was quite pleased to achieved the points for sixth.

The points so far show Michael Meadows on 105 with three drivers, including Richard, on 96. Nevertheless, with 56 points for win, it is all still to play for.

The junior drivers in the team had their problems, too. Peter Blakeney, from Calne, was leading the second heat in Junior Rotax when he was hit hard from behind in the chicane.

The 14-year-old's kart was forced over the high kerbs and, although the race was stopped and the ambulance was on the scene, he was thankfully only winded and suffered no more than severe bruising.

But they breed them tough in Calne and he opted to continue the meeting with a storming drive from the back to make up several places.

Jack Jagger (14), from Worcester, in only his second ever race meeting drove well in Junior TKM. He had a spin in the final race, but had done enough to earn the all-important signature on his Novice Licence.

There is just one more round in the Winter Series, to be held in March, however the results still count towards the overall annual championship.
