Malmesbury Vics FC earn a point in a 3-3 draw at Adderbury

IN the only game played in the Hellenic League Division One West on Saturday, both Malmesbury and their Adderbury hosts showed entertaining football in difficult conditions.

The Malmesbury visitors started brightly and, after Townsend came close to scoring for them on two occasions, they took the lead when Mitchell was brought down in the area.

The resulting penalty was calmly slotted home by Townsend. Within five minutes Adderbury Park had equalised direct from a free kick by Deighton, who managed to get the ball over the wall and past keeper Jones.

The Wiltshire side regained the lead after 20 minutes when a cross by Stuart Greatwood found Mitchell who scored with a terrific diving header.

Within five minutes, it was 3-1 as Mitchell broke down the right and cut inside to shoot into the top corner, giving the Adderbury keeper no chance.

But on the stroke of half-time, Adderbury got themselves back into the game when a through ball found Daly who hammered home a first-time shot.

Making a double substitution at half time, Adderbury went for broke and laid siege to their opponents' goal, although they failed to create many chances.

And it looked increasingly likely that a tired looking Malmesbury would hold out for a win.

However, five minutes from time, a solo run saw Steve Crognale avoiding several challenges before scoring a fine individual goal that gave Adderbury a share of the points in a 3-3 draw.

The Malmesbury Victoria Res versus Bradford Town Wiltshire League fixture had to be postponed due to the wet conditions.
