Talented karter Will Waterman receives a prestigious award

LOCAL teenager Will Waterman has been given a prestigious award in recognition of his driving talent.

Following an outstanding debut season in the 75mph, 100cc category, the 13-year from Moreton-in-Marsh was crowned Best Up and Coming Junior Driver by one of the country's leading kart clubs.

The award capped an outstanding season for Will, who recently starred on Sky Sports TV, when he qualified on pole for the televised Ultimate Karting Challenge - one of the UK's biggest high-speed events.

Despite his relative inexperience, he went on to finish in an excellent second place, against 30 top-line drivers from across the country.

Waterman's efforts have also caught the eye of a former British karting champion.

Mark Allen, who used to race against the likes of Nigel Mansell, now runs the successful Jade karting team and has invited Will to become a works driver for 2004.

Will is currently looking for sponsorship, as he prepares to contest the Super 1 British Championship for the first time.

Looking ahead to the challenge, Will commented:

"It's a really tough championship and I'll be up against some very quick and experienced drivers.

"There's a lot to learn and some of the circuits are completely new to me, but with Mark's help, I'll be looking to give them a run for their money!"

The six-round national series begins in March and visits some of the UK's fastest circuits.
