Mother and baby 'lucky to be alive' after crash

A CIRENCESTER mother and baby were taken to hospital after their car slid on ice, careered into another car and hit a wall.

The silver Peugeot 306 was travelling from Cirencester to Cheltenham on the A435 when the accident happened.

A police officer on the scene said just seconds earlier a Nissan Micra, also driven by a Cirencester woman, had similarly skidded on ice.

PC Ian Leeder said: "The Nissan Micra was going from Cirencester to Cheltenham, it came round the corner hit some ice and went into the wall.

"The Peugeot was travelling from Cirencester to Cheltenham hit the ice and swerved, colliding with a green Rover MG, which was coming in the opposite direction.

"It all happened within a few seconds."

The Peugeot was left propped up on a wall outside a house and drivers were diverted past the accident using the golf club carpark.

The MG was driven by a Cheltenham man.

Those involved in the accident were treated for minor injuries at Cheltenham General Hospital.

PC Leeder said: "They were all very lucky, you can see the damage on the MG, if that had been on the other side the driver wouldn't have been climbing out of there.

"And if the Peugeot had tipped over the other side of the wall then it could have been much worse for the baby."

The properties affected were unoccupied at the time.

The accident happened last Thursday at 7.40am.

(BLOB) Meanwhile, a woman from Cirencester was taken to Cheltenham General Hospital after the black Renault Megane she was driving crashed on the road from Ewen to the A429 near Cirencester at 6.50am on Thursday.

Firefighters had to cut her from the vehicle before she was taken to hospital with what police believed were not serious injuries.

No other vehicles were involved and no-one else was hurt.

The road was blocked until 7.45am while the car was removed and the area made safe.
