Premier League's Bicester are kicked out of the cup by Vics FC

MALMESBURY Vics caused an upset on Saturday when an Andy Mitchell goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Premier Division opponents Bicester in the preliminary round of the Hellenic League Subsidiary Cup.

The Vics started brightly and were first to threaten when good work by Bevis gave Mitchell an opportunity, but his shot was well saved.

Almost immediately, Towns-end brought out another save by the keeper, with the rebound falling to Mitchell who shot over.

Although the Wiltshire side's back four were looking solid, the visitors broke through in the 43rd minute and it took a brilliant save by Jones, who dominated his box throughout, to send the sides in level at half- time.

The decisive goal came 15 minutes into the second half when a superb through ball from Bevis put Mitchell clear on goal.

He kept his composure and lifted the ball over the keeper to put Malmesbury one goal up. Bicester pushed forwards but it was their rivals who looked more threatening.

A fine run out of defence by Wilkins saw Phillamore in the clear, but his cross went straight to the keeper.

Phillamore had another chance, but shot wide following nice work by Baker in midfield.

Bicester rallied and it took several good saves by Jones to see Malmesbury home to their first victory for some time.

All the players deserve credit for a fine effort that brought great praise from their manager, Graham Learmonth.
