League leaders Purton's tremendous run continues apace

THE tremendous run of unbeaten Hellenic League Division One West leaders Purton continued apace on Saturday as they beat an in-form Winterbourne United side at the Red House.

Their 2-0 win was marred only when Toby Clark had to come off with a shoulder injury after 25 minutes, writes Alan Eastwood.

Against a well organised outfit, Purton turned in another excellent team display although, as in the previous weeks, they took time to settle down.

Once they did, though, there was never any doubt about the eventual winners and, but for some good work by the opposing keeper, the hosts might well have won by a larger margin.

The hosts welcomed back Eurshell Fearon and Chris Lang, but Clinton Soares was unavailable to play.

Winterbourne made the early running and had the first chance when an effort struck the Purton woodwork. Fearon was presented with the real first chance for Purton on 15 minutes.

Having a shot parried by the keeper, he then put the rebound over the bar and, minutes later, Curtis came close.

The Red House team took the lead on the half-hour, following a great pass by Fearon down the left to Hughes, and his excellent centre into the box enabled Lee Curtis to stab the ball in after coming back off the keeper.

Shortly after, Curtis shot just wide and then had a header well saved by the keeper.

In the second half, the visitors' custodian did well to save efforts by Ritchie Saunders and Fearon, but could not prevent a second Purton goal on 75 minutes.

Good work on the right by Tom Dingle saw his cross turned in by Lee Curtis from close range for his second of the game.

Further good saves from the opposing keeper denied Ritchie Saunders and Michael O'Sullivan goals before the latter came close with a 25-yarder that went just over the bar.

But the Bristol team missed a great chance to pull one back after 85 minutes, but their attempt went just wide from a headed effort.
