Recycle plea from council

PEOPLE living in the Cotswolds are being urged to recycle their Christmas left overs.

Numerous tips on how to use up cards, bottles, cans and wrapping paper have been drawn up by Cotswold District Council's waste and sustainability manager Dr Amelia Craighill.

She said: "New year means there's no better time to start - make it you first resolution to reduce your waste and recycle all year round. "

She recommends the following tips to help the ecology;

* Take unwanted Christmas cards to WH Smith or Tesco for recycling while also raising money for charity. Alternatively cut up cards and use them as gift tags this year.

* Take envelopes, newspapers, magazines, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans and empty aerosol cans to council recycling sites.

* If possible, re-use wrapping paper next Christmas.

* Natural Christmas trees can be taken to county council tips for composting. Any collected trees will be sent to landfill sites.

* Cardboard boxes can be taken to CDC recycling tips, as can aluminium foil.

A county council tip can be found in the Cotswolds at Fosse Cross, six miles north of Cirencester on the A429, turn towards Calmsden by the hare and Hounds pub.

Cotswold District Council's kerbside recycling scheme provides a box for every household which is collected every fortnight. For details call 01285 623618.
