Model car club finds that changes make for exciting racing

ROUND one of the new championship, sponsored by Geoffs Tyres, got off to a great start on November 8.

Cotswold Model Car Club had changed the points system to make this competition as close and exciting as possible and 21 drivers signed in with 11 nitro powered cars and ten electric.

The cold weather and threat of rain meant that the indoor track was set up, and the slippery surface proved a great leveller as the high performance cars needed to be driven with precision to get the best lap times.

The meeting started with the new Pull start nitro class with Paul Thompson as the fastest qualifier.

In the Nitro class, Ricky Mottram set the early pace with 20 laps (in 5min 2.47sec), only to be pipped to top qualifier spot by Mick Nash in the last heat with 21 laps (5-13.13s).

In the Stock class, William Holloway set the fastest time (18 laps in 5-19.66 while the new Super Stock class top qualifier, Paul Leyfield, clocked up 16 laps in 5-0.61.

The Nitro Pull start final was combined with the Super Stock final with the former won by Paul Thompson and the latter by Mitchell Saunders.

But the Nitro final saw a frantic, ten-minute race with Ricky Mottram (Yokomo GT4) keeping his nerve to take the win with 42 laps (10-14.73) from Mike Humphries (Mugen MTX3) 41 laps in 10-14.07.

The Stock Final also proved a great race with young Richard Johnson (Schumacher SST) driving well to take the win with 18laps 5m14.17s from James Alexander (Tamiya TL01) 16 laps in 5-0.39.

The Geoffs Tyres Champion-ship top positions after the first round are as follows:

Super Stock 1 Paul Leyfield 300 points, 2 Mitchell Saunders 299. Nitro Pull Start 1 Paul Thompson 301. Nitro 1 Ricky Mottram 299, 2 Mike Nash 298. Stock 1 Richard Johnson 299, 2nd James Alexander 296.

The Cotswold Model Car Club is open to anyone who wishes to race radio-controlled model cars.
