A NEW semi professional chamber choir, based in Cirencester, has been formed this month. It is to be known as Schola Cantorum of Cirencester and will be conducted by Neil Shepherd, director of music at Cirencester Parish Church.
"The choir is made up of experienced singers from throughout the Cotswolds and beyond who have a good standard of sight reading and are willing to attempt a wide range of music from medieval to contemporary.
"I would particularly like to encourage young aspiring singers who have already had singing tuition and are able to read music to a reasonably high standard. This is an ideal opportunity for singers who are hoping to move on to choral scholarships at university or who are at the beginning of their professional careers,"said Neil, who has already recruited a 45 strong group.
The choir will be launched on Saturday, November 1 when members will sing choral evensong in Cirencester Parish Church and this will be followed by a high profile Gala Christmas Concert, also in the Parish Church, in December.
Neil is also still trying to recruit singers for the boys and girls choirs at the Parish Church and adult singers for the main choir. He is hoping to organise a tour to Paris next autumn, with a possible chance for the choir to sing in Notre Dame Cathedral.
The Parish Church choir has recently released its first CD of choral and organ music, entitled Christ Triumphant, which is on sale at the parish office in Dollar Street.
