Dave's strike gives Fairford a Legg up in FA Vase trip

TWO own goals and a cracking strike from Dave Legg brought hard-working Fairford a tremendous 3-2 win in Saturday's FA Vase round one trip to Bemerton Heath.

In what was always going to be a difficult encounter against Rymans League opposition, a tentative start saw the visitors a goal down in the seventh minute.

But the Cinder Lane were back in it after an own goal by their hosts on 22 minutes provided a very welcome equaliser.

However, when Bemerton took a 2-1 lead eight minutes before the interval, the Gloucestershire side look to be facing an uphill battle after the break.

With words of encouragement from their manager Mark Webb during the interval, though, Fairford returned to the fray in a more positive mood.

And the relentless pressure finally paid off in the 68th minute when their hosts conceded a second own goal.

Fairford should have added to their tally, but Jamie Webb and Lee Stoddart both missed good chances.

In the end, it was Dave Webb, who was playing in a defensive role, who led his team to ultimate success.

Advancing upfield, the right-footed player eventually got hold of the ball and hit a spectacular shot from all of 35 yards with his left peg to score a tremendous winner 15 minutes from time.

This victory sets up Fairford with a trip to Screwfix side Bitton for round two to be played on Saturday, November 22.
