OVER a remarkable career spanning more than three decades, Maddy Prior has become widely recognised as the voice of English folk music, with a reputation as both as a highly original songwriter and a superb interpreter of traditional song.
Maddy Prior and the Girls come to the Sundial Theatre at Cirencester College on Sunday, October 19 at 8pm, and sees Maddy go back to basics in the female acoustic trio format, with the emphasis on vocal harmony.
Joining Maddy are her daughter Rose Kemp, at 17 already a blossoming singer/songwriter in her own right, with a sultry style all of her own, and singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abbie Lathe on vocals, guitar, keyboards and whistle.
Following on from a rapturously received UK tour this spring, the three are touring their new album Bib and Tuck, out now on Park Records.
The album highlights a variety of material, from folk, gospel and blues, through original songs by Maddy, Rose and Abbie, to inspiring a cappella versions of songs by Paul Simon and Elton John.
The second half of the album is taken up by The Cotton Triangle, a series of songs that explore the musical and trade links forged between Britain, Africa and the southern USA in the 17th century cotton trade.
