Potter's late equaliser rescues a point for United FC

IT was a case of two points lost rather than one gained for United as they had Ben Potter to thank for grabbing a 90th-minute equaliser when the game should have been wrapped up.

In Saturday's Hellenic Division One West game, Middle Barton started well and missed a good chance on five minutes when Umney shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

United then started to get forward themselves and Mat Hanks headed straight at the keeper from a Phil Scarlett cross, then saw his follow-up go wide.

Graham Robinson also had a couple of chances, but was also thwarted by the visiting custodian.

The second half saw United finally take the lead on 59 minutes when Graham Robinson received the ball out wide and turned his marker before producing a cool finish from a tight angle.

There seemed only one winner at this point with the United defence dominating proceedings.

However, Middle Barton produced an equaliser on 67 minutes.

When an attack down the right was not cleared up, the ball squeezed between Keslake and Reeves for an easy tap-in.

Worse was to follow minutes later as Hanks was dismissed for dissent just as he was about to be substituted.

Middle Barton took the lead with ten minutes remaining when a fine, 25-yard drive deceived keeper Mat Keslake and this looked to have secured the points until the last minute drama.

Phil Scarlett was again provider and, when his deep cross was headed goalwards by Clive Messenger, the keeper could not hold the ball and Ben Potter followed in well to rescue his team.
