Local runner Ferris happy to be heading the charts

BOB Ferris was happy to maintain a lead over his Cirencester Athletic Club rivals in last Sunday's Witney ten-mile race to increase his lead in the club's road race championship.

On a warm morning, Ferris ran slower than last year to finish 55th in 71 minute 53 seconds, but was still over a minute clear of Chris Riches at the finish of the hilly course.

Riches knocked three minutes off his previous best time and again showed the benefit of hard training as he moves into second place in the club championship.

Next home were Chris Brough and Chris Sherrington ahead of Elaine Wilson who takes over the lead in the ladies' championship and bids to retain her title.

Making her debut for the club and running the distance for the first time was Ann Sherrington who was delighted to finish in 97min 51sec.

Cirencester results at Witney as follows: Bob Ferris 71m53s, Chris Riches 73.38, Chris Brough 76.17, Chris Sherrington 77.46, Elaine Wilson 80.29, Bob May 81.17, Ann Sherrington 97.51.

With one round remaining - the Stroud half-marathon on October 26 - leading positions in the club road race championship are as follows:

Male: 1 B Ferris 75, 2 C Riches 60, 3 C Sherrington 59, 4 C Brough 47. Female: 1 E Wilson 100, 2 W Jones 90, 3 C Clarke 61, 4 J Wassell 42.

On Sunday, September 28, the Cirencester 10k race takes place in Cirencester Park.

Most of Gloucestershire's top runners will be taking part as the race forms this year's County 10k Road Race championship.

Entries are coming in fast but anyone can enter on the day at Cirencester College.

The race, which starts on the main drive of the Park close to the Cecily Hill gates, takes runners up the main drive and round to the polo grounds.

It then does a double loop via the lodge and the hill up to the polo pitches before returning to finish on the Main Drive.

It starts at 10.30am and the entry fee on the day is £7 or £6 for members of an AAA affiliated athletics club - but you must enter before 10am.

You can save £1 by pre-entering, look on the Cirencester AC website or pick up a form at the Cotswold Leisure Centre.
