Cinder Lane team bounces back against Bassett

FAIRFORD Town FC bounced back from two league defeats by recording a tight 1-0 win in a competitive cup-tie at Wootton Bassett on Tuesday evening.

The all-important goal, scored a minute after the break by Kilfoyle, provided a victory that puts the Cinder Lane team into the first round proper of the Norman Matthews Floodlit Cup.

But Fairford finished as 2-3 losers of a seesaw Hellenic League Premier game played at Tuffley Rovers on Wednesday evening of last week.

With the visitors still settling, Tuffley struck first with a goal from Tatton after three minutes.

A Lee Stoddart strike put Fairford back on level terms in the 15th minute, and that's how it stayed until the break.

Four minutes after the interval, Rovers went 2-1 up with a goal from Meadows which was cancelled out by one from Knowles 15 minutes later.

However, the Gloucester side had the last word when a second goal from Tatton five minutes from time provided Tuffley with all three points.

At home on Saturday, Fairford had an excellent start when Stevenson put them ahead as early as the eighth minute.

The Cinder Lane team held on to their slender lead well into the second half, until a cruel own goal in the 71st minute gave Hook Norton an unexpected equaliser.

When Travers scored for Hook Norton seven minutes from time, Fairford surely felt robbed.

Saturday's league action sees Fairford home to Bishops Cleeve (3pm) and, next Wednesday, they are to visit Carterton.
