Purton FC go top of the table with point from a draw

DESPITE losing their first league points of the season on Saturday, Purton went to the top of Hellenic Division 1 West table by virtue of their 1-1 draw away to Quarry Nomads in Oxford.

With Phil Fisher out with a broken ankle, Chris Lang came into the side and Eurshell Fearon returned up front after injury by replacing Lee Curtis, writes Alan Eastwood.

Although the home side had a fair share of the possession in the first half of the game, they rarely looked likely of scoring.

The one time that they did, it was due to Purton losing the ball on the half-way line.

In a similar situation, a quick tap through the middle allowed John McMahon a simple goal after 30 minutes.

Purton's Avenell, Webb and Fearon all missed out on chances to redress the deficit before the interval.

It was Eurshell Fearon who levelled the match for the Wiltshire side when stabbing the ball in from close range after an excellent, three-man move.

No further goals were added in the second half, although Purton's Toby Clark came close with a free kick.

Disappointingly for the Red House team, Kenny Hughes hit the side netting when a pull-back to oncoming players might have given Purton all three points.

With 16 points collected from a possible 18, it's been a great start for Purton who now go into three home games on the bounce.
