DESPITE making more than enough chances to have won Saturday's tie at Backwell United, Fairford Town's hoped-for run in the FA Cup ended in a disappointing 0-2 defeat.
Presented with a number of opportunities in the first half, nothing seemed to go right for the visitors who were denied two possible goals through goal-line clearances in this preliminary round tie.
However, the Cinder Lane team certainly missed the services of regular striker Lee Stoddart who would surely have tucked away at least one of chances had he been playing.
Instead, it was the Bristol outfit who came more into the game after the interval.
Although there was nothing much to choose between the two sides, Backwell make the most of the chances they created, their two goals denying Fairford a much needed run in this major competition.
Last night (Wednesday), Hellenic League high-flyers Fairford were due to return to Premier Division action with a trip to Tuffley Rovers.
And this Saturday's league fixture sees Fairford Town home to Hook Norton, 3pm ko.
Next Tuesday (September 9), Fairford get their first taste of Norman Matthews Floodlit Cup action with a trip to Wootton Bassett in the preliminary round of this competition.
Looking ahead, Fairford will be expecting better fortunes in the FA Vase with a trip to Bridport scheduled for Saturday, September 20.
Having beaten Bridport 1-0 in the early stages of last year's competition, Fairford will naturally be hoping that history will repeat itself.
