Ladies' tennis team misses out on chance of title

NEEDING a win from their last match to take the Division 3 title in the Swindon and District Tennis League, Shrivenham ladies just missed out, losing 5-3 to Pewsey D.

With first pair Steph Muir and Fiona Scarlett winning three sets, it was all in the hands of the second pair Sally Allen and Gill Hulme, but they failed to take a set off either Kate Way and Judith Deck or Sheena Marsh and Liz Edge.

This result means Shriven-ham finish as runners-up, one point behind Ramsbury B.

In ladies Division 1, Ramsbury A secured a vital 5-3 win in their last match against Devizes to move out of the relegation zone.

Their fate will now be determined by the result of Pewsey B's last match.

In mixed Division 3, Marlborough A's recent fortunes have shown that good luck and bad luck tend to cancel out in the long run.

A fortnight ago, they were forced to concede two sets due to delay by a road traffic accident.

This week, their rivals had to concede two sets by inadvertently fielding an ineligible player.

So the Marlborough squad of Roy Lucas, Gareth Clarke, John Stuart-Smith, Anne Carroll and Mandy Reid has finished as runners-up to Purton B, just one point ahead of Minety. Results:
