SUNDAY, August 10, brought another hot and airless day for this year's Centenary putter competition at Cirencester Golf Club.
As usual, the course was prepared in excellent condition with the greens being hard and fast and outstanding scores were returned in all three divisions.
In Division 1 (h'cap scratch-12), former seniors' captain John McCafferty scored an excellent net 65 to win on countback from Peter Shepherd.
Third, with a net 66, was taken Hamish Mason while fourth was claimed by Martin Taylor with a net 67.
However, a countback was needed to decide the first three positions in Division 2 (h'cap 13-18) with three players all returning outstanding scores of net 64.
The winner was Mike Bond, with Bob Herbert finishing second and Richard Fenton-Jones in third place.
Close behind with a net 65 was placed fourth Mathew Worster. In the ladies' division, there were some excellent scores returned by a number of entrants.
Having scored net 66, first place went to Muriel Telling while a net 67 secured second place for Fiona McKenzie. Chris Keen returned a score of net 68 to finish third and Debbie Organ was fourth with a score of net 69.
The flourishing Seniors' section has played away matches against both Broadway and Wychwood golf clubs recently.
Disappointingly, both matches were lost with scores of four matches to two. On Friday, August 15, a highly successful inter-services Texas Scramble was organised on the home course.
In good weather and on a superb course, a high-flying RAF trio - Messrs Horrell, Downs, and Golding - came out on top with 46 points.
After each of these events, a convivial supper was enjoyed with funds being raised at the scramble to support the junior section of the club.
Naunton Downs NAUNTON Downs Golf Club members Carol and Bob Newton, won the Midlands Bader Cup regional final at Bransford Golf Club in Worcester with a Stableford score of 44 points.
Bob, a 12-handicap golfer, and Carol who plays off 25, will now go on to the national final to be hosted at Palmeraie Golf Palace in Marrakech, Morocco, during week commencing Sunday, October 12.
Now in its 17th year, the Bader Cup is a National Greensome Stableford Tournament which Action Travel, the main tour operator for Morocco, sponsors with their co-sponsors Royal Air Maroc, the Moroccan National Tourist Office and Palmarie Golf Palace resort.
