United FC lose their first game at Corinium Stadium

HAVING dominated Saturday's opening game of the season at the Corinium Stadium for long periods, Headington ran out as deserved 1-0 winners over their Cirencester United hosts.

United startedtheir Hellenic League Division One well enough as Jason Braid headed over from Potter's cross in the first minute.

And then Clive Messenger saw his shot superbly saved following good work from Chris Robinson.

Headington replied by striking the bar with a far-post header, before being denied again by good work from keeper Jason Huxtable making his first start for almost two seasons.

The second half also started well as Potter linked with new signing Martin Garvey who shot just past a post.

But when the visitors stepped up a gear, United were forced to defend too deep as the pressure mounted.

When the away side were awarded a penalty after a rash challenge by Dave Reeves with 20 minutes left, Huxtable made a great double save to keep the scores level.

Headington continued to dominate, but a combination of good defending and inspired keeping looked to have earned United a point - until disaster struck with four minutes remaining.

A cross from the left saw Dave Reeves pressured by the Headington no 9 and Reeves' attempted headed clearance whistled past keeper Huxtable to give the visitors the points.
