Quick-thinking lorry driver prevents serious accident

EVASIVE action taken by a lorry driver saved a woman and four children from being seriously injured in a road accident near Bourton-on-the-Hill.

They were in a green Vauxhall Corsa car extensively damaged in a head-on collision with a black and red Volvo rigid heavy goods vehicle - carrying 23 tons of stone products - at the Troopers Lodge A424/A44 junction just before 4pm on Wednesday, August 13.

The lorry driver, a man from Halesowen in the West Midlands, swerved just before his vehicle was in collision with the car, which span backwards and landed in a ditch.

The car driver, a 39-year-old woman from Surbiton in Surrey, was taken to Cheltenham General Hospital by ambulance, along with her 12-year-old son.

Another ambulance took her daughters, aged 17 and 15, to Moreton-in-Marsh Hospital, along with a 15-year-old female friend who was also aboard the car.

A Stow-on-the-Wold police spokeswoman said none were seriously hurt.

The lorry driver was uninjured, although his vehicle's front off-side was damaged.
