Swindon Town's optimism proves misplaced

SWINDON Town FC looked full of optimism when they kicked off their new season at the County Ground on Saturday.

It was, however, to be short lived as it took only ten minutes for their Sheffield Wednesday rivals to dampen their spirits by scoring three goals in quick succession.

The first two were scored by Lloyd Owusu and the third by Shefki Kuqi. Town were left reeling but rallied enough for Stefani Miglioranzi to find the net just on the half-hour.

With temperatures soaring, both teams looked glad to hear the interval whistle.

And a little over ten minutes into the second half, Town looked as if they might rescue the situation when Sammy Igoe scored their second goal from a free kick.

But despite the hosts' best efforts, they were unable to improve the scoreline and conceded all three points.

There was devastating news at the end of the match when, on their return to the dressing-room, Swindon players learnt of the tragic death of Manchester United's Jimmy Davis following a car crash.

The 21-year-old, who had been on loan to Swindon for a period during last season, proved very popular with playing staff and fans alike.
