Festival is music to the ears of revellers

THE Cirencester Early Music Festival 2003, now in its fourth year, is under way and tonight, Thursday, July 24, at 7.45pm, sees a special concert by talented young violinist Kevin Weaver, a former pupil at Deer Park School, who plays with Naomi Gibson on the oboe, accompanied by members of the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra.

Later in the evening, at 9.30pm. the Fitzwilliam Connection - Elizabeth Lester on the recorder, Diana Statham, cello, and James Scott, harpsichord, play recorder sonatas by Handel.

On Friday, July 25 at 7.45pm, Emma Kirkby, one of the foremost sopranos in the world gives a recital of classical seventeenth century songs, accompanied by internationally acclaimed lute player, Antony Rooley.

Saturday, July 26 is the day of the Young Musicians Promenade Concert which enables gifted young people to gain further experience by performing to a large audience. Having rehearsed in the afternoon, they perform eighteenth century music by Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Sammartini and Mozart in the evening.

All the above events take place in the Parish Church and the Festival closes with Trinitie of Musick at Holy Trinity Church, Watermoor on Sunday, July 27, at 4pm.

From Friday, July 25 to Sunday, July 27 there will be a display of Renaissance and Baroque instruments, which are available for sale, in the Parish Church Porch.
