PAINSWICK GC's Phil and Audrey Payne took full advantage of good conditions to return an outstanding score of 41 Stableford points to land the Corinium Goblets at Cirencester Golf Club.
In this open mixed foursomes competition, held on July 13, they won on a countback from the Cirencester pair of Steven and Rachel Lockley.
On a warm and sunny Sunday with just the hint of a breeze, the course was in excellent condition for the entry of 116 players from 23 different clubs.
The winners and runners-up were closely followed by two pairs both scoring 40 points.
Third on countback were Jeremy Clark (Vale Royal Abbey, Cheshire) and his grandmother, Dorothy Clark of Cirencester GC.
Fourth were the pairing of club captain Gordon Robbins and ladies' captain Sheila Marsh.
Fifth, with a score of 38, were Dave and Jacqui Stephens (Chippenham GC).
Nearest the pin on the 13th was won by Dave Stephens of Chippenham and, at the 18th, it was won by Austin O'Malley of Naunton Downs GC.
The putting competition was won by Meurig Hughes of (Gloucester G&CC).
Perfect golfing weather and an immaculate course were conducive to producing high scores in the Seniors' Section's monthly Stableford competition played on Monday, July 7.
A total of 57 players turned out, and in Division 1 Alan Adey returned a score of 41 points, followed by John Parsons and Martin Lenehan with 40 and Mick Barham 39.
In Division 2, John Stephens also recorded 41 points, in second was David Gibbon with 37 and third on 36 were Colin Gilbert and Barry Gerrard.
During the week, there were also two matches played against seniors from other clubs.
Away at Stinchcombe Hill, the Cirencester team were unable to reverse a losing trend and went down by 5.5 to 1.5 and also at Cotswold Hills by four games to three.
In the Juniors' Section, Sam Tanner, the juniors' captain, continues to have successes in his game and is now down to an .08 handicap.
Regrettably, he is very busy with County games, as he should be, to increase his chances for the future, but this puts considerable pressure on him to attend the club's junior events.
Although unable to play in Cirencester's Junior Open, he has promised to make an appearance for the club's Junior Club Championship in September.
Matches in the North Glo'shire League have now been concluded with the final one at home to Minchinhampton being lost 4.5 to 1.5.
Unfortunately, things weren't helped when a diminished team of four instead of six was all that could be fielded on the day.
The final results are still to be collated but, in the six matches played to date, Cirencester has won only one point for a half.
The July Stableford was won by Sam Maggs with 33 points, followed by Ryan Dix with 32.
