Purton lose their top-of-the-table tennis clash

RAMSBURY men made good progress towards the Division One in the title in the Swindon and District Tennis League when they won their clash with second-placed Purton 6-2.

With each team at full strength, both Ramsbury pairs, Steve Bauer/Marc Higgins and Jon Page/Paul Toomer, won three sets.

In their previous match, Purton had beaten Highworth 6-2, ending Highworth's unbeaten record, and holding the successful Simon Perry/Simon Brand partnership to just one set.

In Division 4, Wootton Bassett B made it eight wins out of eight with a 7-1 win over Purton C, while PAKT notched up their first win of the season, also 7-1, over Purton C, with four sets coming from John Comer/ George Rudnik.

In Division 6, Wootton Bassett D won their top-of-the table match against Aldbourne 7-1, helped by four sets from Andy Whitely/Andy Lanigan.

In mixed Division 1, leaders Purton lost their 100 percent record when they were held 4-4 by Ramsbury, with Ramsbury's Paul Toomer/Sue Wade winning all four sets.

Second-placed Pewsey were also held to a draw by third-placed Ashton Keynes, for whom Alex Rudd/Alison Armitage picked up four sets.

In Division 4, W/Bassett B maintained a 100 percent record with a 6-2 win over Highworth C while Ashton Keynes C scored their first points of the season when they beat Chiseldon B 5-3.

In ladies Division 1, Swindon made it nine wins out of nine by beating Ramsbury 7-1.

Reigning champions Pewsey moved level on points with third-placed Ashton Keynes whom they beat 5-3.

Kath More - making only her third appearance of the year - won four sets for Pewsey with partner Verity Langfield.

In Division 5, Highworth B beat third-placed Great Bedwyn 5-3 to strengthen their hold on second spot with Julie Smith/ Kate England picking up four sets.
