Athletics club chairman shows pace in local race

CIRENCESTER Athletics Club chairman Bob Ferris showed that his rigorous training for next month's Ironman Triathlon in Austria is paying dividends with a strong run in last Sunday's Fairford 10k race.

His fine run also extended his lead in the club's road race championship.

The Fairford race attracted a record entry of over 450 runners, but the warm conditions and deceptively undulating course took their toll with most runners recording fairly slow times.

As in last month's Oxford 10k, first Cirencester finisher was Wendy Jones - although she was a minute slower on the tougher Fairford course and had to give best to Amy Stiles from Chippenham.

Over four minutes behind was Bob Ferris who had the satisfaction of beating his younger brother Kevin by 42 seconds.

Also in the top 100 were Chris Riches and Chris Sherrington who are locked in a battle for second place in the club championship.

Positions and times of the 13 Cirencester finishers are: 14 Wendy Jones 37m09s, 60 Bob Ferris 41.17, 67 Kevin Ferris 41.59, 89 Chris Riches 43.09, 94 Chris Sherrington 43.32, 129 Chris Brough 45.38, 168 Elaine Wilson 47.21, 169 Richard Waldron 47.22, 177 Carol Clarke 47.54, 211 Darren Sheppard 49.54, 227 Simon Moulding 50.27, 244 Jenny Hill 51.34, 312 Fred Robson 53.56.

After four rounds of the club road race championship, the leading positions are as follows:

Male: B Ferris 46, C Sherrington 38, C Riches 35; Female: W Jones 75, E Wilson 72, C Clarke 61.

Next round will be the Frampton-on-Severn 10k on Monday, July 14, starting at 7.30pm.
