Safety to improve under road scheme

WORK on the new access roads scheme along the A419 near Cricklade is due to begin on Monday.

The Calcutt access roads scheme aims to improve the safety of road users and residents on a dangerous stretch of road by closing the existing direct accesses to properties along the A419.

The existing gaps in the central reserve will also be closed and a safety fence installed.

Spokesman for the Highways Agency Steve Self said: "The aim of the scheme is to improve safety by removing the current direct access to and from roadside properties and replacing with new direct access via the B4040 and new roads at the rear of the properties."

The construction of the new roundabout on the B4040 will mean some temporary slip road closures at the Cricklade junction.

In December 2001 three people died when a car careered across the central reservation into the path of two oncoming vehicles.
