Golfers defy wind and rain to win at Cirencester

A LARGE entry of intrepid golfers competed in the I H Smiths Foursomes on May 18 when, despite atrocious conditions, some excellent scores were returned.

The winners, Steve Townsend and Stuart Michaelis, mastered wind and rain to return an outstanding score of net 65.

Returning a net 67 for second place, Peter Denning and Martin Taylor also played extremely well.

And the pairing of Alex Hobson and Tom Stone also returned a sub-par score of net 68.5 to finish third.

Fourth place was decided on countback as two pairs scored net 70.5, Steve Lockley and Brian Kelly prevailing over Andy Buchan and Bill Daley.

On May 17, the Cirencester B team entertained Painswick B in a friendly.

Players enjoyed a course in good condition with the greens in their very best after recent heavy rain.

However, the result did not do justice to Painswick efforts on the day as the hosts ran out 6-0 winners.

Cirencester look forward to the return match at Painswick in July.

Last Sunday, the Cirencester Juniors team played their second North Gloucestershire Juniors League match at Cotswold Edge.

The team of six consisted of Ryan Dix (captain for the day), Rob Jessop, Scott Edgell, Ashley Scrivens, Dan Colman and Dan Gardiner.

Despite all the visitors playing well with several close finishes, the result was a 5-1 victory for Cotswold Edge.

The only Cirencester player to win his match was Ashley Scrivens.

Next league match, which is against Minchinhampton, is due to be played on June 8.

The May Stableford competition attracted a field of 65 Seniors who were faced with a mixture of rain, hail, strong winds and occasional sunshine.

While scores were generally lower than usual, some coped better than others with the difficult conditions.

First in Division One was Robert Tweedale with 37 points.

He was followed by Len Crisp, Keith Davey and Frank Hilton all with 35 points.

Nonetheless, the overall winner came from Division 2 where Ted Pryor recorded an excellent 39 points with Tony Grimwade and Paul Horrell on 37.

The season of matches against other clubs' Seniors is now well under way.

There was a win at home versus Broadway, but defeats suffered at Chipping Norton and Norton Downs.

Even so, there was the usual halved match against Cirences-ter Ladies, an event much appreciated by participating Seniors.
