A large field contested the Dougie Rolls Cup qualifying competition at Cirencester Golf Club last Sunday when the top 16 players moved forward to the next stage - a matchplay knockout competition.
The day started cloudy with a cool wind. Later on, though, the sun broke through to warm things up a little, although the wind persisted in making playing conditions quite difficult.
Winner on the day with a magnificent score of net 62 was Heather Morley.
Second on a countback was John Davies (64) and third Dave Gardiner. With four players scoring 66, Emma Brereton claimed fourth spot while Lee Collins finished fifth on countback.
The remainder who also qualified for the next stages are named as follows:
Jamie Attwood (66), Mike Bishop (66), Dave workman (67), Rachel Lockley (67), Andy Townsend (67), John Corris (69), Robin Rose (69), Martin Taylor (69), Sheila Westmacott (69), Andy Mutlow (69) and Helen Laundau (69).
Players from Cirencester A and B teams visited Burford last Saturday for the first of two friendly matches between the clubs.
The Burford course was in superb condition - and so were the hosts. Despite fielding a relatively strong team, Cirencester were soundly beaten while the hosts proved that having good form and a knowledge of the course are useful advantages!
The visitors' only success came from David Wicks and John Fryer, both late entries into the team. Burford won this fixture 5-1 and the return match at Cirencester is in July.
Results (Burford players first named): David Smith and Mike Paton beat Barry Downer and Gordon Robbins 2&1, John Taylor and Gerry Shields beat John Parsons and Andy Mutlow 1 Up, Iain Forbes and Freddie Hudson beat Pat Waldron and Alan Smith 4&3, Richard Williams & John Cavanagh beat Howard Jones and Alan Moss 8&6, Mick Birchall and Michael Hughes lost to David Wicks and John Fryer 2&1, Dean Yates and Simon Hopkins beat Dan John and Alex Hobson 3&2.
