THE season finally got under way last weekend with two good victories for Bourton Vale Cricket Club's first team.
On Saturday, the newly promoted side entertained Challow & Childrey in Division One of the Cherwell League.
Having won the toss, Bourton decided to field first and soon began to regret it.
For despite two early wickets, Australian Aran Hotznagel and Neil Podbury piled on the runs.
The Aussie finished on 128no as Challow compiled 257-5 off their 50 overs. Jaques Du Toit was Vale's most successful bowler in taking 2-58.
Bourton started badly in reply, losing Mat Walton with the score on 11.
But there then followed a stand of 159 between former Gloucestershire and Kent opener Paul Lazenbury and Mark Whitney.
After the fall of Whitney's wicket, a stand of 81 between Lazenbury and Richard Howells took Bourton to within eight of victory.
And the target was reached with Lazenbury finishing undefeated on 137 in a very accomplished innings.
On Sunday, Bourton travelled to Gloucester City for the first round of the County Knockout.
Gloucester fielded a young side and, after a bright start in which captain David Collinson scored 62, they fell away to 140 all out.
In reply, Saturday's top scorers for Vale, Lazenbury and Whitney, were soon away with a stand of 75.
And they took Bourton into the second round by nine wickets with Lazenbury finishing on 80no and Whitney 36no.
The club's second XI, who were also promoted, started their season away to Cropedy where, despite a spirited display, they went down by seven wickets.
