Local golfers face windy day in a bowmaker competition

Although it was dry on the last Bank Holiday Monday, there was a persistent blustery wind that made conditions difficult for those playing in Cirencester Golf Club's Ron Card Tankards team bowmaker competition.

Despite the windy elements, there were some good scores returned and the comfortable winners of the tankards were the team of Stuart Lockley.

Brian Kelly and Dave Flynn with an amazing score of 90 stableford points.

They were followed by two teams both scoring 85 with Tom Stone, Ian Mercer and John Davies taking second on countback from Ryan Dix, Scott Edgell and Alex King.

The early leaders in the clubhouse with a score of 84 points was the team of the club captain Gordon Robbins, David Attwood and Jamie Attwood, but their creditable score could only net them fourth place.

AT the end of April, the ladies' Alliance A team made an excellent start to the season when playing hosts to Cotswold Edge.

They scored 15 points to three with the following results (Cirencester names first): A Kelly bt C Durber, S Westmacott bt D Pringle, S Telling bt J Hibbitt, S Hadley bt M Barker, A Canty halved with C Carter, L McIntosh bt A Johnson, D Holmes bt A Buncher, C Park lost to J Finch, A Henshaw bt I Russell.

The B team did not fare so well away to Minchinhampton as, on a sunny day and rather blustery day, they lost 16-2.

Scores (Cirencester names first): H Swan lost to F Wigglesworth, J Briggs lost to P Oliver, J Broderick lost to M Whipp, A Williams halved with J Foyle, K Fullerton lost to L Rees, L Collins halved with T Pattinson, B Chesworth lost to D Crossland, F Skull lost to P Browne, L Ferries lost to E Smith. The Spring Scrutton medal competition played in one division was held on Thursday, May 1, and Saturday May 3.

On the Thursday, there were 31 players with several having to contend with a heavy storm and gale-force winds.

But the 20 players on Saturday were luckier with grey skies, but no rain and a light wind.

The winner was M Davey (gross 92-20 nett 72) on the back nine from J Briggs 88-16-72, both playing on Thursday.

The fourth round of the inter- club 'Mail on Sunday' was was away to Minchinhampton last Saturday.

The team of four - S Westmacott, D Organ, C Keen and M Telling - all did well to win their matches to put Cirencester through to the next round.
