HAVING clinched the Hellenic League Reserve Two West championship, Cirencester United Res were hoping to make it a unique 'double' by winning the final of the Anagram Records Reserve Cup against East Division champions Eton Wick at Wantage.
The side recently secured the West division title by defeating Clanfield 4-0 with goals from Sean Kirby, Gary Randall and Les Davies (2), taking his season total to 23.
Despite losing 2-3 in second leg of their semi-final tie at Rayners Lane on Saturday, United won through to the final 5-4 on aggregate following a 3-1 home win in the first leg.
However, the visitors looked to have lost their chance of a berth in the final after slipping to a 3-0 deficit.
But Les Davies brought on Paul Richings at right back, pushed Phil Ponting forward and within ten minutes, Cirencester were back in it.
Jason Braid fed Davies through the middle and his lobbed volley went in just under the bar.
The character that United had shown all season carried them forward, and it came as no surprise when they pulled another goal back to go in front on aggregate.
This time Pontin, who picked up the ball just inside the visitors' half, went on a run that took him past two defenders before he rifled a left-foot shot past the home keeper.
From then on, it was all United - except for the odd and rare scare.
In one lucky let-off, Steve Ford tried to clear across the six yard box, but Matt Keslake chested the ball to safety.
Cirencester United are set to hold their annual presentation night at the Corinium Stadium on Friday, May 16, 7pm for 7.30.
