28 keen model car drivers sign on for an indoor battle

THE fickle weather forecast once again prompted the Cotswold Model Car Club to hold round three of the Stroud Tool Hire Championship inside the hangar.

While 28 drivers signed in for the racing, the Electric Stock class had enough entries to justify splitting them into two groups.

This made getting a good qualifying time all the more important to make sure of getting into the top group when the finals are calculated.

Two drivers making a welcome return to racing were Stroud's Jason Benstock, with his quick Schumacher Fusion, and John Ridding, from Swindon, who normally races in the Nitro class but was competing in the Electric Stock class on this occasion.

The three qualifying heats were held with the top qualifiers in each class as follows:

Electric Stock, John Ridding 16laps 5m1.87s; Electric Modified Brian Hook, 16laps 5m1.68s; Nitro, Doug Tanner 15laps 5m0.40s; Open Class, Will Hatch 14laps 5m2.47s.

The computer sorted the finals and the Electric Stock B final was won by Richard Johnson 14laps 5m3.92s from Phil Bannister 12laps 4m59.10s.

Electric Stock A Final winner was John Ridding with an impressive 17laps 5m2.91s with Sam Tanner second 16laps 5m8.28s.

Electric Modified finals proved a great race with Brian Hook taking the win with 18laps 5m8.16s from a chasing Mitchell Saunders 18laps 5m15.33s.

The Nitro Final was its usual frenetic self with great battles through the field before Doug Tanner took the win with 17laps 5m2.98s from Jason Benstock 15laps 5m2.08s.

A mixture of cars, the Open Final was an entertaining spectacle with the battle between guest drivers Mick Nash and David Gerard. Mick was the winner with 15laps 5m12.38s.

Current standings in the Stroud Tool Hire Championship are: Stock 1st Andrew Mottram 56pts, 2nd Sam Tanner 47pts. Modified 1st Brian Hook 59pts, 2nd Mitchell Saunders 58pts. Nitro 1st Doug Tanner 1st 63pts, 2nd Brian Hook 51pts.

CMCC will be holding a meeting this weekend (May 10) where it is proposed to run the track in the opposite direction to normal - which should prove interesting.

The next round of the Stroud Tool Hire Championship is on May 17. For further details about the club, please contact Doug Tanner on 01285 651251.
