EASTER Monday proved a pleasant day for golf at Cirencester GC as it was fairly warm with only a light wind blowing for players in the Greensome Stableford Holiday tournament.
Three competitions were run concurrently, one for men, one for ladies and another for mixed pairs, favourable conditions making for some outstanding scores.
Ashley Calvert and David Wilson comfortably won the men's event with an excellent score of 46 Stableford points.
Second place was decided on countback with two pairs scoring 41 points with John Kilminster and John Archer prevailing over club captain Gordon Robbins and John Hartley.
In the mixed category, Rachel and Steve Lockley totalled a fine score of 43 to beat Emma and Andy Brereton on countback.
Ladies' vice-captain Penny Taylor and her husband Martin were third with 42 points while the ladies' section was won by Angela Canty and Christine Keen with 30.
Away matches for Cirencester Seniors have been played recently against Frilford Heath on what must have been the hottest day of the year so far.
While the team then achieved a creditable three-all half, the outcome was not so successful against Wrag Barn on another glorious day as the home team won by 5.5 games to 11.5.
The Spring Stableford was played on a day of complete contrast when competitors were faced with cold temperatures, rain and hail.
Even so, some good scores were recorded, notably from the overall winner Ken Mills with 40 points followed in Division 1 by Tony Lester, Phil Hyland and Ted Smith on 37.
Division 2 was won by Ted Emery on 36 points with John Smart and Paul Horrell following up with 34.
Awards for the combined monthly Winter Stablefords were presented after a seniors' dinner in the clubhouse and the winner with the highest total was Ron Carroll.
Top in Division 1 was Alan Adey whilst Frank Hilton and David Warden were joint runners-up. Division 2 was won by Neil Kelly with Philip Bellamby-Knights in second spot.
Last Saturday, Cirencester B team entertained Lilley Brook in a friendly when players enjoyed a course in good condition with the greens responding to the heavy rain of the past few days. In a closely fought affair, the tie was halved 3.5 point s to 3.5. Cirencester look forward to the return match at Lilley Brook next season.
Scores (Cirencester players first) are as follows: Barry Downer/Robert Evans bt Mike Clink/Derek Harris 2 and 1; Nigel Curtis/Bob Mills bt Bill Philp/David Atherton 3 and 1; Marcus Adey/Sandy Rich lost to David Callaghan/David Richardson 5 and 4; Howard Jones/Brian Pfleger halved with Keiron Moloney/ James Moloney; Peter Smith/Paul Stephens lost to Brian Assell/James Douglas 2 and 1; Ron Carroll/Charles Reed bt John Best/Norman Bell 5 and 4; Brian Kelly/Martin Lenehan lost to Martyn Frost/Simon Harding one down.
