Cotswold Arcadians stage outdoor Shakespeare

THE Cotswold Arcadians return to the 'outdoor Shakespeare' scene this year with a new venue and a new director for the 2002 production, Love's Labour's Lost, which runs from July 30-August 4.

After 11 years at the Old Rectory, Quenington, they have moved on to Williamstrip Park, home of the Earl St Aldwyn who has been a patron of the company since its early days.

Director Donald Pickering, who has had a distinguished career in the theatre and television, played the King of Navarre in the Regent's Park Theatre production of Love's Labour's Lost, back in 1962.

He has chosen to set this production in the eighteenth century to fit in with the elegant facade of Williamstrip Park which acts as a backdrop.

The setting of the play is the kingdom of Navarre where the King and three of his friends vow to devote the following three years to austere self-improvement, forgoing the company of women.

But they have forgotten the imminent arrival on a diplomatic mission of the Princess of France and three of her ladies....

Williamstrip Park will be open for picnics from 6pm on each day of the performance and tickets can be booked through the Cotswold Arcadians Box Office at 40 Elizabeth Gardens, Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire, GL7 5LP, e-mail: boxoffice@arcadians.org or 01285 850280 between 9.30am-12.30pm every weekday.

Performances begin at 8pm (Saturday, August 4, 8.15pm).
