WHEN Cirencester B team played hosts to Puckrup Hall Golf Club, the visitors were treated to excellent weather and fine playing conditions.
Despite the fact that a number of the hosts clubs players were showing signs of wear and tear from the Summer Ball only a night earlier, the team performed remarkably well in this encounter held on July 29.
In the end, a comprehensive home win was returned as Cirencester clinched five matches to one.
Winning pairs for the hosts were: Brian Hobbs and Brian Kelly five and four, John Parsons and John Mutlow four and three, John Hartley and Doug Macfar-lane by two holes, David Wicks and Jon Wells also two holes.
The most notable display in what was an excellent performance came from Martin Lenehan who, single-handedly, beat the final Tewkesbury pairing 3 and 2.
On July 6, the visitors to Cirencester were Burford Golf Club when, once again, the B team were blessed with fine weather, although the afternoon was generally overcast.
Each of the matches proved to be very closely contested with individual match results being decided only in the last couple of holes.
With the match result standing at 2.5 to 2.5, it was all down to the last match. This one, like three of the others, went to the last hole with Burford coming out the narrow winners.
The winning pairs for Cirencester were club champion Andy Mutlow and Alex Hobson, who won by two holes, and Peter Smith and Nigel Curtis by one hole.
Barry Downer and John Desmond halved their match. And the team is looking forward to the return match at Burford later in the season.
In a week punctuated by frequent showers, players in the Seniors Section July Stableford competition received several which descended on the 25 who completed their rounds.
In Division One, Mick Barham came out top with 36 points from Tony Lester, Ted Smith and Alan Dymond, all on 35.
In Division Two, Jim Billett had 34 followed in second place by Maurice Taylor with 33.
The following day, a match was scheduled against Stinchcombe Hill away, but this time the weather was the winner as the game had to be cancelled due to flooding of the greens.
Two days later, a match was played at Cotswold Hills against their seniors.
This time, and despite the odd torrential downpour, it finished with a win for the home team by 5.5 to 1.5.
