Cirencester Golf Club notes

ON June 3, a Texas Scramble with four players per team was played at Cirencester Golf Club.

Although somewhat cloudy, the conditions were quite favourable for good golf.

In the evening, the sun appeared for the Jubilee barbecue which was enjoyed by the large number of members and their guests.

After the meal, club captain David Warden presented prizes to the winning team of the lady captain Liz Ferries, Alan Moss, Tony Gatrell and Katie Leigh whose winning score was an excellent 50.6.

Closely behind in second place was the team of Tony Finding, Leah Finding, Alison Henshaw and Tony Henshaw.

Third were Ken Mills, Chris Watson, Len Crisp and David Bourne while the team of Howard Jones, Peter Creswell, Cec Bond and Tony James finished fourth.

On Sunday, June 9, the varied weather conditions had a significant effect on the result of the monthly medal competition.

Initially, conditions were almost unplayable. During the early afternoon the rain stopped, the sun came out and the wind died down to make things more favourable. This gave late starters an advantage.

Scoring proved difficult as, from an entry of over 100, only four actually beat their handicaps. Division 1 was won by A Buchan with a good score of nett 69. In second second place came I Penfold (nett 70) and third, with a nett 71, was J McCafferty. S Underwood (nett 72) took fourth.

Division 1 winner was R J Jones (nett 71). J Davis secured second place from D Attwood on countback, both players scoring nett 72. S Rich (nett 73) was fourth.

P J A Smith won Division 3 with a superb score of nett 63. In second with a creditable nett 68 was A Brerton. Third was D Gardner (nett 69) and fourth P Townsend (nett 71).

LADIES SECTION Between May 12 and 18, it was possible for the ladies of Cirencester to qualify for the Bailey Cup with the best eight nett scores qualifying.

These that did included A Henshaw nett 67, J Cloughton nett 68, L Finding nett 69, H Swann nett 70, M Davey nett 71, K Fullerton nett 73 and L Collins nett 73.

On May 30, 15 pairs played in the County Greensomes Stableford. The winners, who go on to the next round, were C Keen and L Ferris 44pts, runners-up C Park and M Downs 35pts.

The popular Open Eclectic competition was held on June 6. After a night of torrential rain, the ladies were surprised and pleased to find that the green-staff had made the course playable.
