Dudley is made life president

Dudley Georgeson has agreed to become life president of Cirencester Tennis Club, following his retirement as chairman last November.

He saw the club through the early years in its current location, following the merger of the Cirencester and South Cotswold Clubs.

And ably supported by an enthusiastic committee, Dudley has done much to create a club of in excess of 300 players of all abilities.

The original committee was fortunate enough to negotiate a lease with Lord Apsley to lay six courts, three of which are floodlit, in Cirencester Park, near the existing cricket ground.

A better environment is hard to imagine. The club has developed a strong youth policy with players performing well at county, regional and national levels.

At a senior level, the club has also done well with ladies and mens teams achieving Premier Division status at various times since its formation.

But it is at the playing for enjoyment level that the club has really scored with many members just wanting to play an energetic, competitive but friendly game.

During the season, Dudley organised various competitions, serious and fun, and generally tried to create the sort of club that people want to belong to, whether to improve their tennis via strong coaching or just meet up and hit a few balls about.

The new chairman, Adrian Potter, is keen to continue this policy and even expand the social side.

He wants to encourage as many people as possible to visit the club on a Wednesday evening or Sunday morning when theyll be certain of a warm welcome and several games of tennis.

The committee is currently considering whether to make an exchange visit to Germany or France next year.

Coaching is provided throughout the year with floodlights on some courts to help with the winter play.

There are various occasions throughout the week when someone is able to just roll up and get a game. And, of course, courts can also be booked in advance.

Those looking for a friendly game of tennis, or for a more competitive match, may contact Penny Allberry on 01285 658846 who will give full details about the club and how to join.

There will be a Play Tennis opportunity on Sunday, July 7 when, from 2pm, you will be able to play at the club and meet committee members.
